Efficiency now values flow over speed

The HOKA Clifton 11, the newest version of a shoe that changed road running, builds on a legacy of innovation.

The Clifton line launched in 2014 as a lighter option compared to the brand’s well-known trail shoes. Weighing 7.7 ounces for a men’s size 9, it showed that extra cushioning didn’t require heavy materials. Its design included a thick layer of compression-molded EVA foam, injected with the lightest material possible: air, and paired with a curved sole—HOKA’s MetaRocker™—which guided runners into a natural rolling motion instead of a flat foot strike.

A shoe built for rhythm

The Clifton 11 improves on that design. The upper now features a tighter, breathable mesh that secures the foot without extra weight. A Durabrasion outsole, placed only in high-wear areas, maintains lightness while increasing durability. A double-lace lock system ensures a snug fit, preventing slippage during runs.

The midsole remains the same: thick and soft, absorbing impact while pushing the runner forward. The MetaRocker™ shape aims to make each step feel almost effortless—less like pushing off and more like gliding.

HOKA aimed for comfort, not speed. The distinction is small but noticeable. Runners who value steady pacing or long distances often say the Clifton feels like it vanishes underfoot. The Clifton 11 enhances that experience.

Jackie Hoffman, who started Chicago’s Peace Runners 773, has run six marathons but focuses on the miles between races. Since founding the club, he has helped 1,500 people finish their first 5K and 51 complete the Chicago Marathon. His priority isn’t speed—it’s building consistency, community, and the mental clarity that comes from a steady pace.

“The city is unpredictable,” Hoffman says. “Running helps me stay grounded.” He leads group runs through Garfield Park and other city spots, relying on the Clifton 11 to maintain that flow. “To support my community, I need to run. And I need to run with them.”

Other brands have tried carbon plates, rocker soles, and energy-return foams to achieve smoothness, but HOKA’s method remains straightforward: more cushion, fewer distractions. This approach appeals to runners who view the sport as a moving meditation rather than a competition.

The Clifton 11 continues that tradition, designed for those who measure success in miles rather than minutes.

Hoffman sums it up: “You can change lives when you slow down and find peace during a run.” The Clifton 11 won’t make anyone faster. But it might make the run feel lighter—and for many, that’s enough.
